Let the Sun Shine In! (LSSI)
Let the Sun Shine In! (LSSI) is an innovative conservation program aimed at maintaining and restoring oak-dominated forest communities for the benefits of both wildlife and the people of southern Illinois.
To help save the oak forest ecosystem of southern Illinois, the LSSI program is working with land owners (public and private) to promote forest management techniques that allow more sunlight into the forests.
This website is intended to be a practical resource for landowners to use to gain a better understanding of their forests and the resources available to help them let the sun shine in!
Oak Forest Systems
Oak forests are dependent on disturbances, especially fire, to persist. Healthy oak forests have a relatively open canopy and include a diverse community of birds, pollinators, and flowering plants.
Forest Management
Maintaining healthy oak forests in southern Illinois will involve using a variety of management techniques, including prescribed fire and forest thinning, on a relatively large-scale, on public and private lands.
Demonstration Areas
Research/demonstration areas, within a short drive for most landowners, will provide opportunities to see and learn about different management techniques, including prescribed burning and forest thinning.
Management Resources
District Foresters and a variety of federal, state, local, and nongovernmental agencies and groups are available to help private landowners manage their forests. Tax incentives are also available.
